Chinatown Gate in Bangkok

The Chinatown Gate is located at the center of the Odeon traffic circle, it symbolizes the grand entrance to Bangkok’s Chinatown.

Odeon Circle or Wongwian Odeon is a traffic circle of three roads in Bangkok – Yaowarat, Charoen Krung, and Mittaphap. In the circle is a huge red gate in the Chinese style, built for the 72nd anniversary of King Bhumibol in 1999. Odeon Circle is the gateway of Bangkok’s Chinatown, whose main road is Yaowarat or “Dragon Road”.

Odeon Circle is called the “Dragon Head” because it is the beginning of the Yaowarat Road. Chinatown Gate is a real landmark in Bangkok’s Chinatown like Victory Monument in downtown.

According to Chinese beliefs, if you stand in the place where the gate is located, you can be charged with cosmic energy.

The name Odeon is derived from the name of the cinema, which was here until 1989. Then there was a fountain and in 1999 the Chinese gate was built.

At the top of the gate is inscribed in Thai and Chinese “Gate in honor of the 6th anniversary of the birthday of His Majesty the King.

On the side of the Chinatown Gate is a pair of jade lions, which were donated in 2007 by the Chinese government for King Bhumibol’s 80th anniversary, and a jade rabbit installed for the 84th anniversary. There are several inscriptions on the back of the gate about the history of the Chinese in Thailand and the construction of the gate.
